E-mail Quotes

Some e-mail that circulated around the team in the days following the completion of the robot in 1998.

Gilbert Lip

Hello my buddies,

Well, the robot construction is finally done (well, sort of... Let's just say it's out of our hands now!) Now it's time for GFT, Gil's Final Thought. I just wanna say thanks to everyone for the memories and the support. I also want to say sorry to people who I kinda neglected and ignored during the robot. I love you MAN!!!! Now that the robot is sorta done, I can concentrate on more important things, YOU GUYS! (not to mention SAT's, grades, etc.) Alrighty, enough of the mushy stuff, basically I just want you to know that you're my bestest buddies!

Here's a couple of words/phrases that should ring a bell:

  • "Dang, I'm s..l..e.e..p..y....."
  • McDouble
  • Surge
  • Mountain Dew (Yellow 5 power)
  • "CLEAR!!! Ahh my eyes!!!!!"
  • "Dang, I'm s..l..e.e..p..y....."
  • Lockheed Martin NASA "party"
  • Brain Chu
  • "where the heck are the cups!?"
  • Ramen

  • "Jack......Jack.... I'll never let go!"
  • "Dang, I'm s..l..e.e..p..y....."
  • "I'm super, thanks for asking"
  • Quake, Quake, Quake, and more Quake
  • "5 minute break"
  • "What Zuh!?"
  • "Here comes the Big Cahuna, huna..." (Billy's favorite)
  • AHHHHHHHHH (Vince's battle-cry)
  • "Dang, I'm s..l..e.e..p..y....."
  • "Man my hands are itchy...."

That's about all I can think of right now, probably b/c I'm running off of 3 hours of sleep, so I'll think I'll end it right here. okie dokie, later my friends!

Vince Matanguihan

Thanks, Gil, for your all your thoughts. (I've added a few new names to this list, so if you haven't yet hear Gil's spiel feel free to scroll down to the forwarded message.) I would like to take this opportunity to thank all of you who participated in the Robot thing as well as those who supported us in our endeavors. Thank you all. This has been the greatest experience in my life. Too bad it had to end. Oh well. And now for a few of my own memorable words/phrases:

  • Gotta go work on the robot...
  • Power tools
  • Goggles
  • Who's our advisor??? Where is our advisor???
  • We want to be ballerinas.
  • I wanna drill.
  • Bonding

  • I know this might sound stupid, but...
  • Is "she" still in there?

  • I'm not a pessimist, I'm a realist. I don't think that something bad is going to happen. I know that something bad is going to happen.
  • And the most memorable word/phrase that I can think of right now: SPINDLE SANDER

Ahem!!

After reading the, uh, interesting, and um, unique, commentary by two of our obviously sleep-deprived and bordering-on-crazy robot people, I just thought you guys might want a letter of congrats from a sane person. (That would be me) I just wanted to tell all you guys that worked on the robotics good job, and I got fat props for all of you for sticking through with it all the way even though I'm sure it was hard as heck (maybe harder?). Not that I really regret not doing it, considering the fact that I seem to be the only one not on the verge of becoming a raving lunatic, but I suppose that's not the point here. =D

Anyways, just wanted to say good job, keep up the great work, and good luck with the rest of the robot and in the competition. And I suppose I must also advise you all to start sleeping more than your customary 20 min. (during SSR), or for others, your 1/2 hour(s) during English/Spanish. Oh, and doing history notes the night before (or a couple days in advance, like me) ;) would be advisable also. Ai-yah, this is turning into an essay (which I still need to write for history, so that it won't be 3 days late)... And speaking of which, I also have to suggest doing history essays the WEEK they're due...!! =P !!! Hee hee, take care all. I'm outtie now...

Eric

p.s. "The team is very optimistic about its chances, and Park has already guaranteed victory..." Hee hee, sorry, couldn't resist putting that one in there... ;)

Eric Park

To all,

Sorry I'm a little late in replying... well to all those who participated, I hope you guys had a fun time loosing sleep, falling behind in homework, staying incomprehensibly late at school, and generally having a great time. I hope that this project has given you some new experiences and inspiration. Now you guys can all say "Oh yeah, welding, that's easy stuff. What? Power tools? No problem!" Yes, there were some arguments, *ahem Billy*, teachers getting upset, and general robotics problems, but I hope we left you guys with a positive outlook and a good feeling for all that we've accomplished. Not many people can say that they've actually designed and built a robot! For those of you that didn't get to be on the team this year, all I can say is: If you love getting your hands dirty, thinking, designing, and drinking caffeine, this is for you!

A comment:

Eric Feng-

> "The team is very optimistic about its chances, and Park has already

> guaranteed victory..." Hee hee, sorry, couldn't resist putting that one in there... ;)

Ha ha...they misquoted me on that one. I was being sacrastic...not that we don't have a chance at winning or anything... Oh the other thing they misquoted me on, we didn't have an application process this year...we probably will next year though, so apply!

Stuff to think about... =) :

  • What are you guys doing all huddled around the lockers...? =)
  • sparks flying everywhere
  • Where are the screwdrivers?
  • Who can get out 5th?!
  • Hey look, it works!
  • Doh, no more food left?
  • Alright, what do we need to get at Orchards?
  • Sleep...ugh...
  • alarm system
  • no lights in the hallway!

Yes it's all very repetitive, hope you guys aren't getting sick of this yet..=)

Eric

Team Themis!

Anthony Zung

Ya know? I've gotten 3 letters with "Re: Alright! (fwd)" in the Subject: area. All with generally the same subject and format. And yes, it is getting a little repetitive. And ya know what? I'm going to add one of my own thoughts. It just gets ya right here man(pointing to left chest). I'm going to say something that everybody has been either afraid of saying or too proud of saying... I know you all feel this to some degree...

I LOVE YOU GUYZ!!!

Sincerely(and hoping you never see this side of me again),

Zung

Francis Hahn

Well... it is time to add my own two cents..... or 3 cents or a buck perhaps. If I feel that generous. =) anywayz.... I'm sort of glad that the robot is over, it gives me back...... my...... LIFE. =) heheh. Actually I am sort of lost right now. I think I should be getting no sleep or something. I was talking to Jones and he said, "Shouldn't we be working or something?" I felt the same way lost, confused, and somewhat surprised. For my buds who worked through night and used their olfactory sense often around me, (Look it up... I'm trying to be vague.) I commend you guys for a job well done. I didn't know if we could do it but we did. Even if the piece of junk doesn't move one inch, its still done and it will always... alwayz be our baby. I mean it is a love-hate relationship; you love it because you made it, but you hate for being a piece of junk and depriving sleep. Hey but that's the sacrifice that we made isn't it. =) The one thing I enjoyed the most was the camaraderie developed between each member of the team. Of course there is enmity and such but things worked out. I'm surprised I didn't strangle anyone. (I did come close) Anywayz, I hope that everyone does the project again next year and those that graduate and stuff, I hope that you guys perhaps can come back and see our fine specimen of Mills technology. I say again that I respect and am proud of every single member of the team. I know I can be a real jerk especially to some people, but I apologize and hope you accept. I want everyone to remember that we were the first team and the first is not always the easiest. We are the so-called "pioneers" of Mills Robotics. We opened the friggin' door to the forbidden realm. (I would swear but I prefer not to because I am not as stressed as I was as the lift didn't work) Oh yeah, sorry about the robot jokes to those non-members, I just hope that maybe next year you could come by or something. Anywayz, remember that being the first is hard and that we opened the door. Even if the robot doesn't work, we all tried our hardest and best. Our hearts and souls have gone into the dumb robot, so it was all worth it. I'll smack anyone upside the head if they disagree and dis our baby. I'll have to do some butt whoopin'. Speaking of butt whoopin' I owe many a person back for my ever so friendly birthday. Now that I'm 17 and gotten my but kicked I think I'm going to pick of every single person that hit me and gave me a wedgie. You guys have yet to feel pain. Anywayz this email must come to an end. I need to catch up on my hmwk, but finally want to say that TEAM THEMIS RULES.

a'ight then,

Francis Hahn

Keith Sinclair

Hey there my fellow roboteers.

(Sorry if this seems repetitive, mushy, repetitive, insulting, or repetitive)

After completing such a huge undertaking as we have just completed. I can only look back and go, WOW!!! We did it guys. Its now out of our hand, not done, but out of our hands (until April that is). I think the best part of this project was the fun and "bonding" we all experienced. Although tempers sometimes go a tad flared at some instances, in general we all had a great time together. Gazing back at the past couple of months I can now see why I gave up sleep, proper food, track, grades, LIFE for a robot. Dang it, its more than just a robot, its our baby (well yeah sorry lost it there for a second)

When we went down to NASA last Tuesday, many were disheartened by the fantastic designs that the other schools had, but remember its not what it looks like that matters but what it does. Besides half those designs have so many problems they'll be soiling their pants more than us (Maybe) Going with the flow of previous e-mails I thought I might put forward a few lines of my own. Sorry if some don't seem relevant, but most should be understandable

  • That's not bad for a girl (andrea) hehe
  • ...and down. (Vince)
  • Steve's radio must use Energizer, cause it keeps going, and going, and...
  • HEY, you self-served!!! grrrrrhhh!!!
  • So when do the robot's propellers kick in, and you say it only took an hour to build.
  • Wax it up!!! & Lube it up!!!!
  • Mmmmm... peanut butter in a polystyrine cup... anything tastes good when you're this hungry
  • You make a phrase from: DIINSOIGC; (Dang it I need sleep or I'll go crazy)
  • Sleep deprivation stinks
  • It time to do some "Swiss-Cheesing" & "Stylin"
  • and my favorite...

    Kick me in the Jimmie!!!!!

Andrea Chen

Well, I thought that I would put my dollars worth (sorry Francis, but my thoughts are worth at least THAT much... =) ) Thanks everybody for the wonderful experience of working on the robot. I know that I didn't show up as often as I should have (or wanted to, but that's another story...), and I know that I might have driven a few people crazy with my mad desire to drill and thread, or use any type of machinery even. Not just my fetish for power tools, but my healthy food craze and my obsession with clean hands. Heh heh.... I guess you learn about these strange things about people when you work with them so closely and for such a long time. Anyways, I just want to let each and everyone of you know how grateful I am to have been able to work with such a great group of people (yes, even you, Eugene, James, and Jones. =) ) I can't explain my feelings. I'm just so glad that I was able to work with you guys on the robot. I'm so glad that I did it. Not only did I get to have my fun with the machines, but I learned so much stuff that I will need in college (civil engineering all the way, baby!), and I made so many new friends... not that it matters, me being a princess and all.... but anyways, I just want to thank everybody for making my senior year so memorable. I really respect each and everyone of you, and I'm going to miss working on the robot, and miss interacting with everyone. (funny, I even told Eric Friday after the robot went bye-bye that I felt like I should have been doing something.... like drilling or something....)

Well, these are some memorable things that I will forever laugh about to myself. Sorry if they don't make sense, or are repetitive. Yeah... I laughed when I was thinking about it... kinda like when you sit in class and suddenly something funny pops into your head, and you burst out laughing and can't stop, so you press you lips together as tightly as you can, but it doesn't work, and you become even more embarrassed, and laugh even harder, and finally you put your head on your desk (banging it loudly by accident, of course), and try to smother your laugher... Okay, sorry, got a little carried away...

  • Are your hands clean?
  • I wanna drill! Drilling is under control!
  • FOOOOD!!!!!! (And a mad dash to the person carrying 20 bags of groceries)
  • Who wants RAMEN?
  • Is "she" in there?
  • Don't eat that! Do you know what they put in that stuff?
  • Use the soap! There's Dial!
  • WOW! You're eyes are red!
  • PVC and Fiberglass powder stinks.
  • Let's get jiggy with it (or whatever it was), and Andy starts dancing...
  • Righty tighty, lefty loosey
  • Are you mocking me? (when Keith says, "pretty good for a girl")
  • Can I have a ride?
  • Cutting boy has become Sawing Man
  • Eugene looks like MR BEAN!!!
  • If you sweep carefully, you can pick up nuts, bolts, and washers from the pile of dust and icky stuff on the floor
  • Yea! I'm only 200 pages behind in Anna!
  • How many journals have you done?
  • Who doesn't know the words to those Titanic songs yet?
  • I'm a princess...
  • Mr. Foreman Sir
  • I wanna Lathe!
  • "She" is still here?! Uh... I'll be back in an hour or two... or five...
  • I've heard many four, five and seven lettered words that are simply too horrid to type. I hope to never! hear them coming from your mouths again!

Well, that's my spiel. I hope I didn't bore you guys! Thanks for all the memories. We should have a robot is finished party sometime... =)

Smile!

Andrea, the Sailor Scout, Moon Princess, Ruler of the Cherrieos, and healthy foods and sanitary fanatic. =)
